After Scully's untimely miscarriage amidst the task force hunt for Mulder, Mulder is returned from his abduction— implanted with three hybrid embryos, this time much more alien than human.
With the two intercepted by Colonist forces before the pregnancy can be terminated, Mulder comes to his own decision to bring the infants to term, receiving visions of a timeline where they hold they key to humanity's resistance. In this uneasy limbo, beset by dangers within and without, Scully grapples with her dashed dreams and her relationship to motherhood, while Mulder is incited to consider his own place within manhood, womanhood, and everything beyond and in-between.

A routine case goes nightmarish after an investigation into an unidentified beached Globster unearths the realm of a modern-day Dr. Moreau off the coast of Long Island. Scully is imprisoned within the island's grotesque genetics compound, and Mulder, separated, helms an agonizing year-long search for her rescue-- finding her alive at last, but irrevocably changed.
Scully struggles to make sense of her new life and body, lapsing in and out of trauma-induced feral episodes. Mulder, wrestling with his own guilt but unfazed by her condition, believes Scully owes it to herself to accept "the beast within": the force that saved her life.
